In this work, I use vertical lines as the foundation of the portrait, allowing abstraction and representation to merge into a single image. By varying the thickness and spacing of each line, I let the face slowly reveal itself through rhythm rather than detail. I’m interested in that moment where the image isn’t immediately clear, where the viewer has to step back, adjust their perspective, and actively engage with what they’re seeing.
The monochromatic palette is a deliberate choice. By removing color, I direct all attention to light, shadow, and form, letting depth and emotion emerge purely through contrast. The repetition of the lines creates movement, while the underlying realism anchors the work and keeps it human.
I’m drawn to this balance between clarity and ambiguity. The portrait exists somewhere between being fully present and partially hidden, challenging perception and inviting longer contemplation. For me, this piece isn’t just about depicting a face. It’s about creating an experience that shifts depending on how closely you look and how long you stay with it.
