What to Expect When Commissioning an Artwork from an Artist

There’s something extraordinary about commissioning a piece of art made just for you. It’s more than choosing a painting, it’s shaping a story, a feeling, a memory. As an artist, I have the privilege of transforming ideas into something physical, lasting and deeply personal.

But many people wonder: What actually happens when you commission artwork?
Let’s walk through the experience step-by-step, so you know exactly what to expect.

Understanding Your Vision

The first step is always connection. When a client reaches out, we discuss what they’re imagining:

  • Size

  • Colors

  • Theme or concept

  • Style direction

  • Mood and emotion

This conversation builds the foundation, because no two artworks are ever the same.

Design & Concept Development

Once I understand the direction, I begin sketching ideas and options. At this stage, clients often share:

  • Photos

  • Inspiration images

  • Interior styling

  • Brand colors

  • Text or names (if relevant)

Concepts are refined until everything feels aligned. Bold, meaningful, and powerful.

Pricing & Payment

The price is based on several factors:

  • Size of the artwork

  • Material choice

  • Design complexity

  • Deadline or delivery urgency

After approval, a deposit confirms the commission and the creative work begins.

Creation Begins

For me, the creation stage is where the magic happens. Layer by layer, the artwork evolves. Some pieces take days, others take weeks, depending on scale and detail.

I often share updates throughout the journey so clients can see the transformation.

Revisions & Adjustments

Many people worry: “What if I want changes?”
That’s part of the process. Small revisions are normal, and encouraged, to ensure the artwork becomes exactly what you dreamed of. (Sometimes a small additional fee is necessary)

Final Delivery

Once completed, the artwork is sealed, prepared, signed and safely packaged. Whether it’s shipped or personally delivered, the moment of seeing the final piece is always unforgettable.

There is nothing like holding a unique work of art that exists only once in the world.

Why Commissioned Art Is Worth It

Commissioning means:
✔ A story behind every brushstroke
✔ A piece that exists nowhere else on earth
✔ Art made with your identity in mind
✔ A long-term, emotional investment

Prints come and go. Custom artwork becomes part of your life.
