In this piece, I build the portrait entirely from vertical lines, using repetition and precision to create an optical illusion that only fully reveals itself over time. I’m interested in how an image can feel alive.. shifting and changing as the viewer moves rather than presenting itself all at once.
Working exclusively in black and white allows me to focus on depth, rhythm, and contrast. By varying the thickness and spacing of the lines, I shape the contours of the face without relying on traditional shading. Light and shadow emerge naturally through density, giving the portrait movement and emotional intensity.
The face at the center is intentionally expressive, but never fully fixed. As perspective changes, so does the image, forcing the viewer to slow down and actively engage. That tension between control and fluidity is central to my process.
For me, this work is about perception.. how little information is actually needed for the mind to recognize emotion and identity. By reducing the image to its essentials, I aim to create a portrait that isn’t just seen, but experienced.
